What is it with masks?!

In the ADHD sense we think of masks as what we figuratively wear that hides our frailties or differences in how we function.

As with everything ADHD related, since my assessment last week I feel that I am looking back and attaching meaning to behaviours – rightly or wrongly.

Masking is an interesting one. I’ve always hated masks, painted faces etc say on clowns, mime artist, costumes etc and unsure why. I vaguely remember being a young boy at the circus with my parents and my dad was hit on the head by a clown carrying a newspaper rolled up and me crying, inconsolable. That may have been the start of it.

Or…

It may be that being neurodivergent I am hyper vigilant about reading body language and facial expressions, ticks and cues that tell you (not always reliably) where you’re at with someone and what they think of you.

So perhaps for me masking in the physical sense denies me the chance to know the intentions/motive etc of somebody else – or I just hate bloody masks and it’s no deeper than that!!

Would be interested to know if this resonates with anyone.
