Getting ready for ADHD medication

I’ve always pledged to update folks on my own experience with late diagnosis ADHD and yesterday I received an email from the provider that diagnosed me.

They are looking to start me on medication and asking me to provide information around blood pressure, pulse readings etc so I can get started.

I’m excited about the prospect of starting medication because I have heard positive things about how it has helped people.

For some it has brought clarity of thought and vision for the first time in their lives which sounds great if a little scary.

For some it has taken the edge off the worst aspects of ADHD.

Also, for some it has made them feel numb and less of the person they are.

So I’m going in with eyes wide open and ready to see how it goes for me. I already access psychotherapy and ADHD coaching as support which will remain, I don’t think meds alone will be sufficient to help me to manage the less helpful aspects of ADHD.

The understanding to hold into is that meds are not a cure for ADHD, there isn’t one. This isn’t a recoverable illness but a neurodevelopmental condition/disorder/difference.

I’ll update you on my experience with it and look forward to hearing more about your experiences of ADHD medication.
