It’s obviously not just folks with ADHD but I am sure that a fair percentage of neurodivergent folks take out subscriptions as it’s a buzz to do, makes you feel part of something bigger and dopamine flushes through – in my experience the following happens:
- Excitement at seeing something you like
- To and fro deciding if you’ll make the most of the subscription to justify the cost
- Think that you might not ever get it at that price/saving again
- Take the plunge and sign up, yes I know that it’ll go up in price after 3,6,9,12 months. I’ll cancel in good time
- Get months into the subscription way past the end of the promotional price and realise that you don’t really use it enough
- Forget step 5 and do something else instantly
- Go back to step 5 a few months later and see that you have to phone up to cancel the subscription (why not email or live chat?)
- Pluck up the courage to phone and cancel.
- Get persuaded by the very nice and skilful sales person who gets you a new introductory deal.
- Rinse and repeat – back to step 5.
