Finding your identity as an ADHDer

So you have ADHD and you’re re-evaluating your whole life.

Big question when doing this work is around who you are, do you feel that you have been living fully as the person you are? Have you been trying to confirm to the social norms and staying undetectable so you avoid any sense of criticism?

Being diagnosed at 51 means that me starting to be more the person underneath the veneer will always look like a midlife crisis – so be it. In a way the diagnosis has been part of a crisis where the masking and holding so much in has had to end, like a flood where the defences have finally been breached.

Turning it into a positive is key but for others around you it might be difficult to understand. For me I’m learning to care less about what others think and I’m bringing more spontaneity into my everyday life and planning on doing things I wouldn’t have before like getting a tattoo for example. It’s all part of getting to know the real person underneath the act and letting him out.

This might resonate with some people, others less so but if you have been diagnosed with ADHD and feel like you’ve been pretending to be someone else, perhaps now is the time to have some fun with it.
